OCSiAl, an international technology firm headquartered in Luxembourg with manufacturing operations in Novosibirsk, Russia, unveiled a breakthrough technology for the production of single wall carbon nanotubes (‘SWCNTs'), which enables large scale, commercial production of SWCNT for the first time. Carbon nanomaterials, studied by thousands of researchers and companies around the world, continue to hold the promise to usher in a new era of materials technology

Single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) were independently discovered in early 1993 by scientists at IBM Almaden Research Center and at NEC in Japan. The IBM and NEC groups each found that transition metals co-vaporized with carbon catalyze the formation of SWNT with a narrow range of diameters around 1 nm. Cobalt was used at IBM and iron at NEC. The results of the two groups were reported in back-to-back papers in the June 17, 1993 issue of the technical journal Nature. Most SWNTs have a diameter of close to 1 nanometer, with a tube length that can be many thousands of times longer. SWNTs are normally capped at the end and have a single cylindrical wall. They exhibit important electric properties that are not shared by the multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) variants, and as a result are of greater importance for next-generation electronics applications, field-emission displays and nanosensors. They are also more pliable than MWNTs, yet more difficult to produce cost-effectively, limiting their use to niche/high-priced applications at present.(Source : Wikipedia)
